I read in a news story that the city of San Francisco has banned plastic shopping bags from their city...what do you prefer to use?

I prefer to use paper bags or bag that I brought together with me. Like Guardian bags good for shopping and also big enough in your shopping cart ;).

I remember paper bags from when I was very young. But as I got older they just seemed to disappear. I can't place what year it was or how old I was but to be honest, in my area at the grocery store, the gas station, etc.. It is all plastic bags. I had completely forgotten that once upon a time in the mid to late 1980s that we had paper bags. I do not know if it is the whole of my province (Ontario, Canada) but in my area of Southeastern, Ontario you don't get the option. It's all plastic. It didn't occur to me that you had an option until i was visiting my boyfriend in New Hampshire and we went to the grocery store to pick a few things up and they offered him the choice. I thought it was cute! But it got me to thinking "Hey!! Where did Ontario's paper bags go?" I think given the choice I would still choose plastic though because at home we use the plastic bags for a variety of other things and as sad as it sounds I think I'd be lost without the grocery bags at home. I also like taht at some grocery stores in my area they offer you the choice of plastic bags for 5 cents each to bag your groceries or they have a bin filled with cardboard boxes. They take the cardboard boxes that the stock comes in and put them up front so that the customers can choose to use the boxes for their groceries. I use a lot of boxes at home and it is better tahn all of that cardboard going to waste after the grocery store has no more need of it.

Generally I use plastic shopping bags but I think that paper bags are better for nature.

Where i live there are only plastic bags most of the places. I use plastic bags, but i try to reuse them several times. Even though I know i should bring my own bag made from cloth

i honestly prefer paper. i can reuse it for bagging leaves (garbage bags are illegal here),and in most cases, they're stronger than today's plastic.i rarely have had a paper one rip walking home from the store.the plastic ones tear all the time.
