Trivial discussion topics

I always check out what today's top discussions are and Im really surprised about how trival some subjects are that seem to provoke real discussion and responses yet issues which are, in my mind, much more thought provoking get few responses. Is that because its too hard for some people to have a real opinion on sensitive or important issues or because people answer trivia more often to boost their ratings. What's your opinion?
