buy or rent DVD's

i always liked watching movies in the theaters but sometimes i'm just horrified about the cost when going to movies, plus the popcorn and drinks. i start buying used DVD's and i believe its better than renting them. even if its used ones @ least its being inspected and cleaned and u can own it. unlike renting them, u have to go back to the store to return it and it cost the same. what do u think? am i being cheap or just being thrifty?

I'd rather buy one than rent one because I can watch the movie anytime when I want.

I do not believe that you are being all to cheap at all. I kind of think it's a smart thing to do. As sometimes going to the theatres can be rather expensive to do on a regular basis. The only bad thing about deciding to purchase a used dvd, is if you haven't seen the movie before.. And decide to purchase it instead before seeing it.. If you don't like it, it kind of sucks because your stuck with a DVD you don't really like or want to watch. Though at the same time.. I suppose you could always sell it if you no longer watch it or like the movie in general as well. I find personally the only time I go to the movie theater is if my other half is given free movie tickets from his job. When he works over time he tends to get free movie tickets for helping out around his job. So that's when we usually go. Even though that is a benefit.. At the same time I dislike going to the movie theatre to watch movies because of the fact that.. I find people to be so rude.. And sometimes they will talk really loudly, or giggle while your trying to watch the movie.. Plus I find the seats to be rather uncomfortable to.. I have purchased movies I hadn't seen before & I'm pretty good at knowing if a movie will be good or not. And I find I saved on a lot of money instead of going to watch it in a theatre. And if I didn't like the movie that I hadn't seen before.. I end up just selling it instead & getting my money back. So it wasn't at all a big deal. If anything it was a smarter way of doing things instead of having to dish out a great amount of money for a movie that I may not end up liking.. But also sitting in a theatre in uncomfortable seats.. I love being able to get a used movie for a good deal.. And being able to watch it in the comfort of my own home as well. Though both me & my other half tend to rent movies a large majority of the time. I like seeing a movie before deciding to buy it sometimes. Especially ones I have seen the preview for.. That I am not sure if they would be a good movie or not.. The ones I think will be a good movie.. I don't mind deciding to purchase them as I get a good feeling about them in the first place anyways.. And am usually right when it comes to getting a good feeling about most movies I see the preview for anyways.. In conclusion.. I don't find what you are doing is being to cheap. I think it's being quite smart in all honesty.. I know I have done the same thing before as well.. I tend to rent movies though before deciding to purchase them as of recently.. But if I really want to see a movie & can't find it to rent or see in a theatre.. I tend to instead just purchase the movie instead.. And most times when I decide to do so it ends up being an over-all great movie in the long run anyways.. So I ended up saving money & benefiting from deciding to do this in thee end.. I just think when deciding to purchase used movies.. You need to ask the seller questions before hand.. And to check there ratings.. I know I do this as I end up usually buying them online anyways.. So doing this can be a lot smarter decision sometimes in the long run in my opinion! . . Thanks for allowing me to share! xx

I have admitted on MyLot that I am a cheap SOB and I totally agree with what you have said.We have 3 DVD players(plus our 2 computers) but I have not used eithe of them as I am saving it for emergencies(ie. cable goes out or gets too expensive).I therefore have about 100 DVD's I bought or was given that I have not yet watched but can anticipate.

I rent alot more than I buy- I'm the type of person who really doesn't like to watch a movie more than once- Unless its a great movie-- and how would I know that unless I've watched it- So I always rent movies- I'm a member of blockbuster online- The movies come right to the house and I mail them back or take them to blockbuster- Its on my way to town. I seldom go to the theater- its expensive--- not comfy-- and I'd rather watch movies at home.

It is too expensive to watch movies in the movie theaters. My brother works at a video rental store, so he gets to rent them for free and I watch those or I just wait until they come out on digital cable. Your not being cheap.

Hi, bbkks18, copare the cost and find the cost in your favour. Sometimes after watching , i deliver to friends. so i get a new dvd not watched previously. what about its quality?

I prefer buying second hand dvds, they ae usually cheaper and perfectly fine to play. The costs of going to the movies are just too expensive for me now so this in the only way I get to watch films
