Java is a strong programming language. Actually, anything you can do with .NET can also be done in Java. I think the difference that matters is that .NET is not platform independent. It only runs on windows platform, no? While on the other hand, java is platform independent. I prefer java over .net anyway.

Yet another factor, Low cost commercial quality IDE's Java developers can make use of Good IDE's like Eclipse,Netbeans etc... these are open source and free to use And also you can make use of hell lots of plugins and customize too.... .well .NET alone cost you $500.

Yes I think that java will compete .Net Java has a good feature of high security and platform independability which makes it more attractive. Also java is opensource and can be customised. So it doen noe follow strict liscansing issues as does microsoft. Also performance wise java is good.So many big busingess applications are shifting towards java.

Yes among all the features you have mentioned is good , well i've to include one of predominant factor in java, that is running multiple version of JVM in same machine !!. Its common to have multiple version of JVM available and running simultaneously in same machine ,this is useful when you need to test your app on different version of JVM. Try to do this is .NET. In .NET , you need to install different version in each machine :-) ,,, its Disgusting.....

I would change the question and put it some thing like this,Will .Net compete with the java world. Java is lot more stable and secure than .Net and also more scalable and ofcourse platform independent. If you see the pattern , all the new features which java brought a few years ago. .net is bringing them now, So I say java wins. :)
