How do you choose a charity?

I have been wondering how some people choose the charity's they donate to! I always choose from my heart and find they are the charities in need of which family members and friends have suffered from. ie, Kidney failure, heart disease, suicide etc. One charity I think is strongly neglected is for the aged. Charities for the aged are not as well advertised here as others. Is it the same where you live?

I usually choose based on something that I have had personal experience with. The 2 that I always donate to are Cancer Society as my mum passed away from cancer and also anything to do with the blind as my grandma was completely blind for about 35 years of her life.
