Is it wrong to download anime?

I can't watch it on tv, cause they don't show it where I am, and I don't want to pay the high prices for the anime unless I know I'm going to want to watch it again. So, I ask you, is it wrong to download anime? When I like a series, I do buy it to support the creators and the actors and all that... Like I own DN Angel, Fruits Basket, Gravitation, Sukisyo, Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicals... and I wouldn't have bought those if I hadn't have first downloaded them, because I didn't know if they were good. I've also bought the manga books of the series I enjoy and now I have over 30 manga too... and it's all money that I never would have spent on things if I hadn't 'previewed' it first. So, do you think it's wrong? Even if I'm still supporting the companies of the anime if I like them?

ARRR ye be a pirate, Ahem But still downloading anime isnt so much wrong as inconvient, as it becomes a cycle, you download because you cant watch it, and they dont show it because it doesnt sell well and so on. So as long as you still buy the ones you like then it not bad, just like watching a film trailer that has clips from a film, all of them ;)

lol... I like that... the super-extended version film trailer :P Just like they release the director's cut with tons of extra deleted scenes and things lol... It's a super long trailer with all the 'deleted' scenes (the scenes deleted from the trailer, that is hee hee hee)

I also have some original animes DVDs. But some original animes have poor subs (wrong grammar/sub, spelling etc..) I think it's not that bad, as long as you don't sell it for your own profit.

Yea, I've noticed that with one of mine too... the subs just seem off on it, and I know a bit of Japanese, so I can tell some of what is being said, and then they say something unrelated at the bottom. Then there are other times when they talk for like 20 seconds, and translate it into "yes" lol... so that is kind of bad sometimes. And yea, I wouldn't sell it for my own profit, since I didn't create any of it, so it's not my place to be taking money that I didn't earn.

Its illegal if it entire eps. maybe only 1-3 eps is enough. But most people need more than that. Mostly dont want to buy after they watch entire movie ^^ me? I suport legal VCD. I'm very seldom to Dl thing. if there is Legal VCD approach, I'll buy it. I have more than 100 Anime VCD and more than 400 manga ^^ All of them is publish legal in Indonesia. ^^ My B'T X capturing sceene was removed from youtube. I only upload few part from last eps since many ppl want to see it (I cut from original VCD). BUt youtube remove it. Thats means it illegal

I think if it is against the law, yes. However, why don't you ask the creators of anime? Tell them if you really like it you will support them. If you don't, you won't. What matters is what they think. Another way to think of it, is if you created anime would you mind if people did that?

I wouldn't mind it if I knew the people that enjoyed it might turn around and buy my work. I've spent close to $1000 on anime and manga, all of which I never would have spent if I didn't first download it. I had no idea what anime was... I thought it was just cartoons... but after watching it, I found it was so much more, and it made me support what I liked, just like I support the tv shows from over here that I like. I've spent probably two or three thousand dollars on tv shows that are shown on my tv stations. Since anime isn't shown here, I was never exposed to it, and therefore without my "illegally" downloading it, the whole market of anime and manga that I discovered online wouldn't have made any money off me and wouldn't be making money off me in the future. So, for people like me, if I hadn't gone and done the "bad" act of downloading it, then they never would have made a cent off me or the other people I've since got hooked on it that hadn't watched any anime before I told them about it.

I think its not wrong to download anime as long as you keep it personal and not for you to reproduce or sell.

As Rekkuso so comically put it, that would be pirating which is illegal. *cough* Ahem, thus I do not condone such naughty behaviour *nudges discs of pirated episodes under desk* Very bad. tsk tsk Seriously though, most of the time the anime isn't available to buy online or watch and so there really is no option. The majority of shows that I download and watch though I do end up buying when they become available so I fyou continue to support the creators I don't see anything wrong really. I believe that is how the creators look at it too since they're not raising a fuss like the music industry. :)

Well.. I think the companies or the creator wouldn't mind if you download (illegaly) 1 or 2 episode just to get a glimpse of it :) You actualy contributing to both side ( the place that you download the anime and the anime companies, if you did buy the anime )

That's true... Well, if I don't like the anime anyway, it's not like I continue to download the rest of the episodes and hope it gets better lol... I just move on to another one to see if I like it :)

Why should it be wrong? It is alright to download anime as long as it is not corrupted and buying and downloading is just the same. In my case I only download all the anime that I want. Afterwards I burn it because it is one of my collections. Regarding to manga I don't feel reading mangas most likely I prefer it watching it on anime. But buying those stuffs isn't wrong as long as you are happy and comfortable with what you are doing its fine.

no its not as long as you keep it for your self. when legality is the issue, yes its good to buy anime to support the creators. as you have said you wouldnt want to waste your money buying stuff and has no idea what is it about unless you saw it first.

Hmm.. I think it's illegal eventhough I also wanted to download animes.. hehe.. Hmm.. why don't you build a small group which for the people who likes anime. and then you can borrow and lend the vcd. or you all can buy it together and copy it for yourself? [is it illegal too? =P ]

Well, I don't think sampling is wrong. How else do they expect us to learn if we're going to like the show? Give them 40$ and pray to the all might Animethulhu that it's good? I think not. On the odd occasion I come across a copy of an anime I've downloaded and liked I buy it. Which, to put in the proper perspecctive, stretched across the last three years has totalled two discs of chobits, two of moahoromatic, one of Dual!, one of Vandread, and one I just bought because it was a x/xx.xx$ sale and it was by whatsisface who did Lain and Haibane Renmei. It's just not available to me. The fact that I have no credit card (not for lack of trying) limitsme to Walmart... and at the rate of 6 dvd's per three year span...

No everything uploaded on the net is free...I mean if you can't watch anime in your own country that you REALLY REALLY want, but could'nt 'cause of a few certain reasons such as it's not yet liecenced, exclusive only for Japan..etc, your hand will be forced to download anime for the love of it and interest. Problem is when it's liecened you need to support the ones that made that certain anime and buy the ORIGINAL and not the pirated ones. So it can be said as a dun deal.

I don't think it's wrong, especially if you buy some as well. Much of it isn't even possible to buy because it doesn't get released on dvd etc... I watch all my anime online or from downloading, or buying bootleg dvds. I sometimes buy a couple of copies of the dvds if i really like a series, but my way of supporting it is buy buying merchandise and stuff. If we anime fans had to go buy legitimate copies of all the anime we wanted to watch, we couldn't afford to be anime fans...it would just cost waaay too much. I thnk downloading is fine, as long as you try to support the animes you like in other ways as much as you can.
