Tuition fee increase is not RIGHT! We deserve a cheap education because we are a state university!

Hi! I'm a graduate of UP and I'm pursuing my MA Ed now while also working under the university. I just want to clarify some things: 1. Free education is a right only to Elementary and High school students. College education is not a right, it is a privilege. This is constitutional. 2. State universities are given budgets by the govt, hence, we are called "iskolar ng bayan". We cannot demand so much because we are just recipients of this privilege. 3. It is time that we pay our dues to the university in order to upgrade our quality of education. The increase is still relatively cheaper than other universities. Don't be so selfish. 4. They are still going to use special brackets for those who can afford to pay more and to those who cannot. If you are from a lower income status, you wouldn't have to pay so much. The richer students will pay more...isn't that fair enough? You should listen to Monsod's lectures! Read up some more and don't complain like a baby!

haha. ma'am monsod. it really doesn't matter if the tuition fee increases, coz it eventually will. what irks us, the students most, are the arguments laid by mrs. roman. like, 'why complain when we, current students won't be affected? only incoming freshmen.' and also, it could have been possible, that the raise in the tuition fee not be so steep. another thing, i was thinking of suggesting that UP utilize it idle assets. but it got to me, it's mandated that UP land be used for academe, research, etc, right? haha. sorry, just letting off steam.

You're right! But what are you doing guys to stop this increase? Do you have plans or do you just scream? Do something before the next school year opens.

The answer to the degrading quality of education in UP is for the government to pay attention to better education in the Philippines. UP teachers are being pirated by other schools. Another thing about this issue is that the government is pursuing its plan of privatizing the university which should, as much as possible, should not happen. The country is dominated by less fortunate people. How can they ever afford better education if UP is privatized? Well, if the university is privatized, they would be free of their "financial burden."

being in UP, we are entitled to a cheap education. however, it cannot be denied that the quality of education that the university has been offering for the past few years has been dwindling. this is because the government is now unable to give the university the budget it needs to sustain not only the facilities but also the salaries of its professors. and as such, plight of good professors outside the university cannot be prevented when other institutions can offer them a double or triple pay compared to what the university can give. we as its students should help. the tuition fee increase was not decided overnight. it had undergone all possible researches that dates 10 years back. so it has been planned and talked about for a long time already. the increase made will go to the improvement of the facilites and teeaching staff of the university, to still be able to make it at par among the best universities across the world.
