My dad did some work on an older home with plaster walls. He says you can buy "picture rails" or even cheaper for smaller pictures, put masking tape where you want to put the nail, it will keep the nail from making too much damage. For bigger picture with more weight, try two or three more hanging hooks or the picture rail. You want to disperse the weight in different places, rather than it be focused in one area on the wall.
