I'm pretty sure many of you have heard that in order to get bigger muscles, you must focus on the big compound lifts. That is the Squat, Deadlift, Bench Press, Shoulder Press, Barbbell Curls, etc. If you read internet articles on bodybuilding they heavily focus on this, but what about isolation movements(chest fly, leg extensions, calf raises, etc.)? Opinions please :]

Well if you are a beginner then just stick to the compound lifts. Become strong on those and then you can always add isolation movements at a later date. The way to get stronger and therfore bigger is to use the compound lifts. The compounds hit larger areas of the body. Isolation exercises are really better when you have more muscle mass and what to etch more detail into the body. You may find that your calves don't respond as much when doing compound movements like squat. Calves usually respond better to a higher rep range like 12-20, so you could add calf raises to the compound lifts.

i am a fan of the big lifts. my workout routine focuses on these 5 lifts. on day 1 i go bench press, squats, rows. and then on day 2 i go for military press, deadlifts, squats then rows or pullups. these lifts made me improve and go to heavier sets of weights and i also gained muscle. i also do these if i am on a cutting phase. i just use lighter weights and but with high repetitions and sets like gvt. if i still have some energy left, i go for some isolated lifts like pulldowns and curls.
