I don't think many people nowadays pay that much attention to their names, as long as they don't sound or look stupid. Every name definitely has its origins; Even it was made-up, there would still be something that it was based on. In that sense, names do have their names. The only question lies in whether or not we should explore them and if they were worth the exploration. I'm not sure about the situation with names in English or other languages. As for Chinese, they tend to study the names before they give any of them, because they believe that names are more than just representatives of people. Instead, under certain circumstances names could have a lot to do with people's life. A well-thought name could exert positive energy to affect or even change someone's whole life while a careless one might be disastrous. So before they give names to the newly born, they often study the names best they can to make sure that it excludes negative implications. In that sense, I guess you can say giving names in China is an art. In other parts of world, maybe it's different traditions. Anyway, a name is good because you think it's good, and maybe it is good indeed - it carries with itself good meanings only you aren't aware of.
