We are considering homeschooling, and I wanted to hear from the other parents out there who also homeschool. What are the advantages and disadvantages of homeschooling? Also what made you decide to homeschool?

I think the advantages of homeschooling far outweigh the disadvnatages. As long as the parents are active with the homeschooling, you will be able to find proggrams and groups to join that will provide the social aspects for the chilren. Homeschooled kids tend to have higher test scores and are better able to handle "real world" situations than their public schooled peers. It appears to be due to the personal attention the homeschooled child gets, not to mention the high parental invovlement in the process of education and lack of negative socialization that happens in the schools. There have been many studies done showing why homeschooling appears to be the better educational option for families that have the means to do it. But there are some people that simply can't homeschool and their are children that definately do better in a school environment. BUt no matter what educational option you choose for your child you still ahve to be involved, because I believe the overall outcome of teh child depends upon the involvement of the parents.

I totally agree with you. While I'm not trying to brag, everyone comments on how smart my dd is and can't believe she's only 5. I don't think she'd be this way if I didn't homeschool her though.

My husband and I are thinking of homeschooling our daughter if we can't find a good school for her that more or less meet the standard that we are looking for. As we read so many negative things happening to children and many perverts running around, that is one of our main fear. Also, with so many bullies in school and so many negative behavior with students, it makes you think, it is much better to be at home and be safe. Although, she might not be able to interact with other kids everyday like in school, but my husband told me that in each state, there are programs for homeschooled youths and you can have a get together so kids can interact with each other. That is what we are planning. She is still 2 1/2...we are actively looking for a good pre school that she can spend at least a few hours and be with children her age. We will enroll her in a ballet class and some other activities just for socialization. This is just my opinion though. I will be at peace knowing what my child is doing and is safe...but like I said, if we can find a good school that meet what we are looking for, we might let her attend a regular school.

We're homeschoolers, actually unschoolers, and it's working out great for us. My dd is actually ahead by a few grades but it's sad that there's no homeschool group around here. Ooooh! Thank you for asking this question! I will be watching this thread for answers as well. I am currently TRYING to do "summer homeschooling". THe kids are out for the summer and I want to keep them busy doing constructive things rather than just watching tv or playing video games.
