give money instead of buying present...

gift - present

Do you gift money instead of buying present for b'day or wedding or any other special occasion ??? I do sometimes gift money (reasonable amount) to some special person for b'day gift and wedding gift... In that way, they can buy the present/ things that they really want to have and I wouldn't end up buying things that they don't need or didn't want to have. How about you ????

yes i prefer money but i also like unusual presents. i take the time to be creative and shop around or purchase it on ebay so the gift is unique or one of a kind. but for me, i prefer the money lol

Interesting !!! You're right, sometimes I did find also unusual stuff/ gift on the internet. One of my friends had been searching for things for his car (old timer), and I found one small accecories on the internet shop and I gave it to him as b'day present and he was just jumped up and down like a kid....hehehe.

haha! most people chose money. we're too practical now, huh? but really, it's good to look for gifts, too even if it's too stressful.

I do exactly the same thing. Because if they don't provide a list or something that I can go by hten I just give them money becuase it is a big waste of money if you get something they don't like and it is tossed into a corner or closet and never seen again till it's throwed out in the trash. So yeah money is a good option most times. Plus they get what they want. And if they later don't like it is no fault of ours..lol

Exactly, I agree with you. I'd feel sad if I gave somebody present and they only looked at it for a second and then just tossed it into a corner....snick...snick... Thank you for your respond !!!

I used to always give presents but nowadays people seem to have everything . My grandchildren I now give money as they are teenagers and what does an old nanny know about teenagers clothes lol , No I think it's much better they pick them by themselves , At easter now I give money too and not an egg , At one time they had 12 Easter eggs each , not a good thing .xx

Speaking of easter, happy easter weemam !!!! My daughter often got identical present for her b'day, and my daughter was about this close to say "again, I got one already !!!" to the couple that gave the present. Luckily, I was able to convinced her to just say thank you instead of complaining.....phew. But also don't ask my daughter list of what she wants to have for her b'day....hehehe, it will be a loooooooooong......list... Thank you for your response !!!

It really depends on the person. Sometimes I know exactly what they would like, a lot of my friends collect items, as I do, and I know what is missing from their collections. Sometimes I give vouchers for a shop which I know they like to buy from. I rarely give money itself because though, as you rightly say, it does prevent duplication of presents, I still feel it appears that I have not taken the trouble to select a gift. For my Godchildren I set up savings accounts and put a small amount in there on birthdays etc. Not a lot of cash as I have never been rich, but hopefully enough to get them through their first three months of leaving home and fending for themselves.

I am pleased you found this helpful. Perhaps my godchildren were already lucky in that they have had a lot of other people to buy them gifts, and particularly when they are babies there are only so many cuddly toys a child can take, so I hit of the idea of saving cash for them to use at some time in their lives when they needed it. Another thing that our family do is to join together when someone gets married and buy premium bonds, they are something which costs one pound but which mean the bearer could win up to a million pouns, but if you cash them in you don't lose the value. That way the bride and groom have a bit of hope for some more money but if they want to cash it in they have £100.

Thanks !!! Another great gift idea of yours...never thought about premium bond as gift but it is very interesting. I'll try to find out more about it and it will be on my list for a gift, too. You are such a lovely Godparent for your Godchildren !!!

Since the last few years I am also giving money instead of gifts. At the same time to close people I still use to give gifts. Actually I like to give gifts. But most of the time I fail to select a suitable gift. Hence I decided to give money instead of gofts, so that the recipient can use it for some real purpose. I think it is a nice idea.

That's one of my problems too. Some people just have almost everything already and I don't want end up giving the same thing what other people gift. Thank you for your respond !!!

I too love to gift money on most of the occasions where close persons are involved. The basic reason sure is that they would buy what they need or make more judicious use of money given by me. In our office too i see that mostly people love to get money rather than gifts as they are mosty used as items to be regifted.

I do agree with you limcyjain. Nowadays I tend to give more in form of a gift certificate or money and I see more happy faces and excitement in them when they received it. Thank you for your sweet respond !!!

Sometimes I do give money as a gift. Most often it is because I don't have the time to put much thought into the gift or it is because it was specifically asked of me to give money. It all depends. Most often it is a gift certificate. I am very bad at buying gifts and would rather they buy what they truly want than have to wait in line at the customer service desk to return the item I bought. Thanks for the discussion!

Well, most of the time I'm facing the same problems too (just like you) when it comes finding some gift as I often ended up buying the wrong things. I guess I have enough seeing people pretend that they like my gifts only to find out they give it away to other people next week.... Thank you for your respond !!!

Hi,apakabar2007! Well, that depend on the receiver. If I want to give gift to the people older than me,for example my parents,my grandparents or my professors, giving money as a gift is no polite.Buying gift to them is a proper way.But the older people can give money as a gift to younger people. That's okay. But if the receiver is my friend, sometimes,I will give money as a gift. With my money they can buy something they like or need.

I think you must give money instead of buying presents. There is sure very charm in go shopping and select present for someone but you are not confident that he / she will like your present as all people have their own likings / dislikings.

I know what you mean, when I got money/ gift card I'm also excited about it. I can buy things that I like more and I'll show what I did with the gift to the person that given me. And they are happy to see that I'm happy too. Thank you for your kind respond !!!

Personally I always find a gift, because sometimes it does take quite alot of effort. I think that giving money or vouchers are a cop out unless of course it's what the person has requested because they want something in particular. :0)

It will be a lot easier if the person just let us know/ at least give us a hint of what they want for a present, won't it ?!? Thank you for your respond !!!

We only give both my daughters and step-daughters money these days .. whatever we buy them is bound to be wrong .. so they all get the same amount for their birthday and for Christmas. We will always buy a present for our grandson .. at 2 there is always something that he needs. Plus we put some money into a trust account for him when he turns 18. For special occassions .. major birthdays we will buy a present instead of giving money .. and it will be something that will last for them rather than money which will probably get spent on something useless. One of my step-daughters got married last year .. we paid so much money for the wedding .. plus gave them so much additional money for their honeymoon .. as their wedding present. Instead they chose to spend it on something for the house .. that was their choice but we didn't give them anything else. As I said we paid for most of the wedding costs .. plus special things for the bride of course. So it all depends on the circumstances as to what we do. In the main it is money except for special occassions when it will be a present or a combination of both things. They 4 girls are all treated the same with regard to money and things that they are given .. buy one then we buy 4, one for each of them so there can be no claims of favouritism.

It is a really great idea to put some money gift into a trust account especially for younger children. It will be very helpfull and appreciate in a long term. And I think you are doing a wonderful job treated your 4 girls the same way...so there will no jealousy who's getting more and not. I know how girls can be catty sometimes...hehehe. Thank you for sharing !!!

I would much rather in that case buya gift certificate at a store that has a variety of things. Otherwise they might just use up the money without really spending them on something for themselves. =) I have done this alot of times, and giftcertificates are always appreciated!

give money instead of buying present? What a stupid thing. Money was never a gift, and money cant replace GIFT Value. Its stupid to think to give Money instead of Gift. If you have a gift then when you see that gift it will always let you remember the giver of that gift. isn't it/.

Well...it's a matter or personal choice and opinion. If you prefer to gift a real gift than give money as gift....than so be it.... I do appreciated your opinion. Thank you for your opinion !!!

I usually do this specially when I don't have time anymore to buy a gift or I couldn't find the right or good gift to buy with my alloted budget. But I think children are more excited to see a gift specially toys rather than money which usually goes to the parent's hand. This is one reason why I wanted to change my way of giving. Instead of money, I'm looking forward of buying good gifts as a Christmas present.

No, I myself...don't think that's bad idea too. Because if the person that gets the gift is happy and appreciated that's all what matters....doesn't matter of its real gift, gift certificate or money. Thank you for your respond !!!
