What is the best gas to use for your car? Are we being ripped off?

Do you ever wonder if all the ads from the gasoline companies you see on TV are true? I would assume that gasoline does come in different grades and quality, but when companies promote their gasoline to being superior to others how can we be sure we are getting the best value for our dollars spent? Gasoline prices are too high nowadays to accept what we are told. There should be some qualitative and quantitative method consumers can use to test gasoline.
