I don't know if you've ever heard of Clark Howard. He's a consumer advice guy who started out as a travel agent, and now he's quite well-known and popular. He's said to be amazingly cheap! He buys his ties and his umprellas at the dollar store, and his sunglasses too! Anyway, Clark's always out to help people save a buck, and he always seems to have all sorts of god advice. He said that at least based on statistics, tap water has to be more healthy (sanitary) than bottled water, because the water in your municipal system is constantly being tested and checked for impurities, contamination, etc. By contract, water bottling facilities don't run those kind of exhaustive tests on their water except about once a month or so. So Clark's advice there is to use tap water and not waste all that money on bottled water. For some brands, you pay almost what you pay for a gallon of gasoline! Where I live in Georgia, the water comes out of the tap sparkling clear, but sometimes it comes accompanied by an unfortunately foul aroma. So we bought a countertop filter and now we pass all our drinking and cooking water through the filter. I've never had a complaint. .

To check for the potability of tao water first you have to observe. Check if it has any visible materials on it like sand, grimes, etc. check also for the color (should be colorless), check also its odor and lastly its taste... if in any way your still not sure about it... i guess you can consider boiling so that you can drink it afterwards.

Actually you can have it checked by your local sanitary unit. You just have to bring a sample and they will run tests on it to determine the presence of impurities that could be harmful for your health.
