Provocation, are you up to it? This necessary?

On one of my discussion, someone responded relating something about "provocative" discussions in nature that easily made this discussion seemingly alive, its not sensual in nature, nowhere even near it. There is some truths to what he related, we as human are emotional by nature - it has long been known by may a psychologists (& i dont think so we a psych to affirms this), for sure by many of us as well. I notice how easily, a topic that is provacative in nature to what is accepted or expected natural dogma would easily seem to gather steam by respondents. I would like to know up to what limits should we observe. Lets understand what are its pros & cons, including the obvious.
