How to create a transparent GIF file?

There is one software available called GIMP, its free and open source and you will not have to pay any thing and can create GIFs with out any problem and easily.

What I use for making GIF files transparent is Irfanview. It's available for free at www.download.com But before you make it trasparent, make sure the background had it's own and unique color that will not match to any color of your subject. You have to work on that by using the Paint program in Windows. When you're done, remember to save it as a Bitmap file first and then you can make it as a GIF file by using Irfanview. When it comes to animating GIF, well I don't know if there's a freeware for that but what I use now is Namo GIF animator.
