I brown all my oinions and stuff at the same time.We all have our own ways. Doesn't always mean one is right and one is wrong. We're just different, and do things in many different ways.

I think it could go either way. I usually cook the onions first as that is what martha stewart said to do. LOL! She says that cooking garlic too long will make it bitter. Sometimes I don't pay attention to what I'm doing and cook them all at the same time. Never had bitter garlic. I guess it's just what you are used to doing. :)

I love garlic. Garlic on anything is delicious. It is so good and smell so great.I am not a fan of onions at all. I hate onions with a passion. Just the smell of onions makes me sick.

I start cooking with onions first and add garlic once they turn brown. It always tastes better.

i personally do the onion first..not sure there is a right or wrong way though..i do the onion frist because it takes alittle longer than the garlic...

Onion needs to go in before the Garlic. Garlic will burn very fast, and very easily, and can ruin the whole dish, so its always best to do onion first, because Garlic only takes a minute or so.

What were his reasons for telling you that? Has he had any formal training as a chef? I wonder if the onion needs to cook first to seal in the flavor before adding the garlic. This might make the two seperate flavors distinct. I always throw everything in the pan together, but I am no chef. Don't worry too much about it. If it tastes good to you when the meal is complete, then you are a success.

for me whether it is garlic or shallots i will throw them both together at the same time into my cooking pot or wok. But if it the big green onion, then this is mostly i use as an ingredient for me to take the aroma out to be nice. So green onion will goes later compare to the other items in the list. So there is no first thing and no last thing for garlic and shallots as they are thrown in the same time.

Garlic cooks very quickly and can burn easily while onion takes longer to cook through so I always put in the onion first.

Actually it's better to start cooking the onion first. The reason for that is....if you let the garlic get to dark....it turns bitter in flavor.I guess your friend could have explained to you why...but I'm sure that was his reason for telling you that.
