This is my fourth time in India and I am now here on an employment visa. The first three times were on tourist visas. As long as you follow the minimum guidelines and pay the fees there should be no issues with obtaining a visa. Duration of visa will vary depending on your current citizenship. My tourist visas were each six months in length for example. All they required was proof of return ticket. For some citizens of countries that may be considered "high risk" in terms of the tourist overstaying their visa; proof of accommodation may be required also as well as proof that you are able to sufficiently support yourself financially while on holiday. Personally I found the tourist process quite straightforward. The employment visa process was much, much more complex though.

Most definitely possible as I am an Australian and British Citizen yet obtained my Indian Visa's from Manila in the Philippines. As long as their is an Indian Embassy wherever you are you will be fine. As for a letter from a friend..... It can't hurt if the letter is stating that accommodation is provided.
