computer IP

Can some one explain me what is the concept behind this "IP"..how is it possible to know the geographical location of a computer from IP ?

I think from the IP you can find out who the internet provider is but not too sure whether or not you would be able to find out the geographical location.
Maybe one of the other members will be able to assist you more on this, hence the reason I am bringing the discussion forward. Good luck in finding out. :)
