Normally, a team needs to win their games in order to clinch a top spot. In Detroit's case, their clinches came from a shootout loss and inactivity. Detroit's overtime loss against Chicago gave them the one point they needed to clinch the top spot in the Central Division, taking the ball out of Nashville's court. Dallas managed a 2-1 victory over Anaheim, the only team in the conference in position to challenge the Wings for top spot in the West. Wings now have their conference clinched. So what's next? It's between Detroit and Buffalo right now for top spot overall in the league. Detroit and Buffalo both currently sit with 111 points, however while Detroit has only one remaining game, the Sabres have two.
