Reading biographies and autobiographies of great achievers gives immense strenght. From the latest three books I have read (Wings of Fire, My experiments with truth and biography of Vivekananda) one thing I found common that is determination of will to achieve a goal whatever the situation may be is very important. Ofcourse a goal in sight is a prerequisite. Also the attitude towards things and life in general is very important. As Gandhi believed and named his autobiography "my experiments..", indicating putting your beliefs and mind into action is more important than success or failure. Everybody must have read the story of an ant trying to climb the wall, as in childhood this story gives courage to try so knowing about the ups and downs of the achievers gives courage, patience and a rigour to work hard. And most important is that when you look back at your life you should not feel that you didnt try enough but whatever were the circumstances you faced them and gave your best shot.
