How many of you know about the dowry system??well me being an indian knows a lot about it. but i wonder whether this wierd system is only in India or is it followed in any of the other countries! Those who doesnt know wat it is, i shall explain it: it is system in Marriage where the bride's parents give valuables things such as gold, money, house, car, household things and many more to the Bridegroom for marrying their daughter. the thing is that in most places the bridegrooms parents demand as they wish showing the value of their son's stature, educational background, etc..if the bride's parents are unable to face their demand, then the proposal is dropped off..the sad fact is that some of the parents make their son study more just for seeking more dowry by getting him married. they dont even mind whether the bride is good or educated or watever, just see wat the brides parents can bring out from their pocket.. Really sad it is..seems like the parents are selling their daughter to an unknown person and giving them huge gifts like this. there are circumstances where the girl is being ill treated and being killed by her inlaws just for the cause that they didnt get the full dowry in time after marriage as promised by her parents..WAT A WEIRD SYSTEM. I dont know who bought in all these stupid things to life.. why is women treated like this. both men and women are the same except their gender. why is this community like this..?One more thing to tell wat i heard some years back.. THIS HAPPENED IN SOUTH INDIA (SOME PARTS OF RURAL TAMIL NADU).Whenever a baby girl is born, the baby doesnt even live for a day. its been killed by dropping a bit of rice in its throat. the baby dies of suffocation. this happens just because they are afraid that they should give loads of dowry when the girl grows up.. but this was been punished and stopped by the then chief minister.. thanks to her..JUST SEE.. HOW THE WORLD HAS BEEN CRUEL TO WOMEN.. WAT DO YOU PEOPLE THINK OF THIS..? I REALLY LIKE TO KNOW WHICH ALL COUNTRIES ARE FOLLOWING THIS WEIRD CULTURE..I HOPE THERE ARE NOT!!!!

I have heard of the system before but have never talked to anyone with real details. It is not practiced in the US. What percentage of the Indian people participate in this system. Is it very common? Is it considered outdated now?
