What do you say to a sufferring person?

I have found it best to simply listen to them. You can tell them that you would like to help them, but being silent and just listening is best. Trying to reassure them too quickly will not give hem the chance to absorb the news and then decide what they need from you. The key is to wait, so that you don't make things worse.
