What's the difference between Today's Top Discussions and Today's Hot Topics?

I still consider myself a newbie as i've been here for only a month. I noticed there is the "today's top discussions" and "today's hot topics", what exactly is the difference between the two? how will your discussion appear there? can someone please enlighten me. Thank you very much!
