How safe are alternative drugs (herbs)

Last month my daughter had to go to the doctor for a rash. After days of treatment the rash was still there. The doctor finally asked her if she was taking any alternative drugs (herbs). Which she was, and wouldn't you know it, that was the cause of the rash. If the herbs we take are not tested by the government how do we know they are safe to take? Do they use pesticides on these herbs while growing? Are they handled by other people? Are they packaged in a sterile environment? Are some of them the cause of our sicknesses? Do you take any alternitive drug(herbs)?
