TurboGears Experiences?

I've written frameworks and applications in several languages, but I've gotten little opportunity to muck with Python for web development. I've written lots of Python stuff but just never for the web before. My experiences with Ruby on Rails left a sour taste in my mouth, partially because it was my first experience with the Ruby language (probably not the best way to learn a language) and partially because it felt too rigid and forceful in how it wanted me to do things. I'm wondering if exploring a similar framework built on a language I'm more familiar with would be appropriate, or if I'm just setting myself up to be bitten by the second half of my complaint about RoR. Has anyone here used TurboGears to build a web app that amounted to more than a blog? I've got lots of ideas, and not lots of free time to play with them, so I'd like to avoid wasting those free hours with stuff that's not going to work too well. Opinions welcome.
