The hassles of buying our first home

My husband and I are in the process of trying to buy our first home. Because he has a judgment from a car repo on his credit and I have no income as I am a stay at home mom, we are constantly hitting dead ends. We have done everything that we thought we needed to do, including getting a co-signer with perfect credit and raising a significant down payment, but we still seem to be getting nowhere. When we actually do get approved it's for an outrageously high loan, the interest rates are ridiculous and the monthly payments are way more than we can afford. If we had the money to pay off the repo we would, but we just don't have it. Has anyone else gone through a similar situation? What did you do to get through it and get into your new home? Any ideas on what more we can do?
