What does lol mean?

Can anyone tell me what lol stands for. I have been seeing this in a few disscussions and I've noticed that it usually comes before something depressing that the person is saying. Am I close?

LOL means "laugh out loud". ROFL means "rolling on the floor laughing". And LMAO means "laughing my a** off". It took me a while to learn those too. Well I think it really depends on the subject, I see a lot of sensitive subjects where the people I m sure are using it as Lots Of Love......

lol stands for laugh out loud. it's used a lot in caht that is where it' started

actually it means "laugh out loud". when you say something funny, you tend to laugh right, but it's hard to express laughs when you write so "laugh out loud" was put on the scene. i don't know who started it though =)
