Beagle shedding hair

I have a question for other beagle owners. Our pup has just turned 1 and she sheds hair A LOT! I've read that beagles aren't supposed to shed too much, but she sheds more than any other dog I've ever had. Is it because she's still a puppy and she's shedding her puppy coat or maybe her summer coat and growing her winter coat? (we're in Australia). It's not like she's going bald or anything she still has plenty of hair, it's just that she's leaving hair all over the place! I just wanted to know if anybody else's beagle had done the same. If not we'll get the vet to check her out in case she has a skin condition. You know it wouldn't surprise me if she did have a skin condition. She has allergies - she gets red eyes and a snuffly nose in spring and summer. It's funny really as both my husband and I have allergies also - funny that we should get a pup that's the same!

I had a beagle puppy as a teenager. He DID shed alot. If she has plenty of hair and you don't see sores or anything odd on her fur or skin I am willing to bet she is fine! One thing that may help is buying a higher quality dog food. Foods like Innova and Natural Choice seemed to help with my dogs shedding and giving him a healthier coat. Hope this helps!

We feed her natural food. We buy a meat loaf that is hand made by a pet food store around the corner. It has fresh mince, pasta or rice and vegetables in it. She also has puppy mince for breakfast. I might talk to the vet and ask whether we should be supplementing with something else. Last time we were there though (about a month or two ago) he said her coat was in really good condition, as it is very shiny and silky. I've tried to get her to eat dry food especially for puppies, but she just doesn't like it. I tried mixing it with the mince, but she eats the mince and leaves the dry food. I've been very wary of feeding her commercial food since I've been receiving quite a few emails regarding what actually goes into it - what I read was pretty scary! She absolutely loves the meatloaf, but I think she might need more nutrients as she is still growing. I'll do a bit of research and see if I can add something natural to her food, like lecithin or wheatgerm to improve her coat, and also anything that might support her growth.

I've had several beagles throughout my life, as many as 3 or 4 at a time, and I've found that they do shed...a lot! a healthy diet is important, but you have to remember that what seems healthiest and works for one dog, may have a totally different effect on another. We've often had to have 3 different dogs on three different diets. Brushing with a slicker brush helps.

Lazy Buster - Lying on "his" rug on the back porch
My buddy Buster also sheds a lot. I'll vacuumn then 30 minutes later there is dog hair all over. I've tried different diets and still the shedding. All I can suggest is what I now do. If you really love the dog it's not a problem. Buy a good quality brush & brush his fur a couople times a day. Buster lays really still loving the feel of the brush it seems. Less hair all over the house. But a ton for the garbage. Oh & I usually do it outside weather permitting as it can be a mess at times with the fur flying all over. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

My hair has always been straight, and that's the way I like it. When I was little it was long, but as I grew up I realized it was more practical to cut it to shoulder length. I find it's easier to take care of, that way. I have to spend less time on my hair, in the morning. I prefer my hair to be straight because straight hair seems to be manageable. I also like to keep my hair straight because I could easily maintain my hair that way.
