Why do dogs howl when they hear a siren or firetruck?

It seems like my whole neighborhood goes into a frenzy when a ambulance goes by and we live next to a hospital.

Is that a bat in your picture? I can see why sirens hurts your ears too.

WOW does that bring back memories. We used to have a dog named Duke that did that. It was funny. Thanks for the memory jolt. He was such a cool dog.

You must really miss him a lot. Nothing like taking a dog fishing and they get as excited as someone does when they catch a fish. You can see the anticipation in there eyes as much as yourself when realing it in!

It's the high freguency that gets to their ears. They have a better hearing capability than humans.

Same reason why my dog howls when the smoke alarms go off and the emergency sirens in town go off. It hurts their ears and they are voicing their pain. Anything high-pitched will hurt an animals ears cause their hearing is 10x better than ours.

Sure wouldn't want to live in your house, I am a very quiet person inside, don't even slide my slippers when I walk or turn lights on!! I wonder if it hurt's other animals as strong too?

Yes, I do believe your correct, dog's must have more sensitive hearing than other animals. But some dogs just don't do it.

I have wondered this myself. My dog usually looks very alert, and attempts to follow the sound, searching the window. He isn't excited, as your dog sounds, but interested. I take advantage of this time to see if he'll be vocal. I've been trying to reward him after I prompt him to "speak" but he only really makes noises when there is a siren going off. We live a few blocks west of a fire station. I'll be so glad to move as I find the sirens very unnerving.

Sometimes I feel grateful for it. That way if a intruder is ever trying to get in, they will hear it before I do and start barking!
