Family You Could Live Without?

Do you have family members that you honestly wish you were in no way, shape, or form related to? A family member that makes you cringe when you see their name flash across your caller ID? I do! I have an aunt that never calls except when she needs something, and who, at 40-some odd years old still can't manage to take care of herself without her big sister's (my mother's) help. Said aunt also gave birth to .... My cousin, who had a kid at 14 and who doesn't do jack to take care of him. He's nearly 4 and has had absolutely NO potty training. I know that some kids are slower than others, but my cousin doesn't even make an attempt at it. She also didn't teach him to walk. She barely pays attention to him at all! He's at my house 6 nights out of 7 in any given week lately, because no one else will babysit for her while she goes out and gets drunk. But, if we don't take care of him... who will? She'd go out and get drunk WITH him if she had no other option. Soooo ... those are my family woes. Yours? :P

Although I am very close to most of my family. I do have one grandfather that I would prefer to have never met. For the most part he treated my mother like dirt, than all of sudden he wanted back into her life. Well she let him back into her life, but he was always critical of me and my brother and it seemed we could do no right by him. I use to make him cards when I was little, when he would visit I would give them to him, and he would toss them right into the garbage right in front of me. Being young that would hurt my feelings pretty badly and I do remember several times telling him to leave the house. Haha! Kids! Even now I will not let him visit me here in Kentucky, because I just know he'd find something to nit pick at whether it be directed towards me or towards my husband. At best it would be the worst thing I could allow to happen. I wish I could find it in my heart to find a way to get close to my grandfather, but as much as I try, the more I just get angry at him. Cause I like being close to all my family members.

I can certainly understand where you're coming from. Although I do not agree with my aunt or her daughter, and it is not healthy for me to be involved in their lives I do wish that I had a better relationship with them. I like to get along with family! It's unfortunate, though, when despite how much you WANT to get along, and be close, you just can't. :(
