Potty Training

April 10, 2007 2:16pm CST
My little boy will be three in 3 weeks and is absolutely refusing to go anywhere near trying to go on the toilet or a potty. As soon as his nappy goes off he will rush to get a new one. When asked to go on the toilet he will refuse and if putting him in big boy pants he will just wee in them. Any suggestions?

...tried training my daughter a little after her first birthday - after a week and no success i have given it up. my husband is the opinion that it wont work as long as the child cannot speak and understand. And so i waited and started with it again just a month before her 3rd birthday. I have decided to use a reward system - the thing she likes most -that is going to the playground! I printed ten blank stars on a half sheet of paper, cut-out colored stars from a magazine and everytime she pees on her pot she gets a star and she is supposed to paste it on one of the blank stars - and when she has collected ten stars we will go in the playground. It had gone easily and faster than i hope it would - after three weeks she has discard her last diaper. hope this trick will help you...

I finally got my son potty trained with a tip I got from his doctor. My son loves money. Loves to collect change in his bank. Now, my son's problem wasn't that he wasn't capable of being potty trained - he just didn't want anything to do with it. With his doctors advice, we bought him a special little piggy bank and explained to him that each time he goes peepee in the potty - he gets a "pee penny". If he goes #2 - he gets 2 pennies. This worked great and once he gets so many peenies (with help from my pocket book) I take him to the dollar store to buy something for a dollar with the pee pennys he has earned. I mean, for $1.00 - you have 100 potty uses! I was concerned about this becoming a habit but after a while the child starts forgetting to ask about the pee penny. Once in a while they'll remember - pretend you forgot and give him one. It worked for my son and apparently for many others since this is something his doctor sees working for kids. And also, when at home - my son would wear big boy underwear so that if he had an ancident - he would feel it instead of pull ups soaking it up. We left his pants off and he just wore the underwear so that it was easy for him when running to the potty. He only got pull ups for bedtime and car rides and we made sure to have him sit & pee before doing either. Good Luck!

You son is just not ready for it yet. When he is ready he will let you know. I bought a little red turtle potty but all my son did was play with it and not do anything in it. Then I bought a potty seat cover for the toilet and sometimes he just liked to sit on it because it was comfy LOL. I would let him run around without any nappy on and when he felt the urge to (and if he told me) then I would pick him up and plop him on the toilet seat. Of course there were a few accidents but it was all part of the learning process. Maybe you should hide the nappies and say that you don't have anymore, and that if he feels the urge to go, then he has to use the potty or toilet. Have him run around with underwear and or just shorts on without a nappy. I also let him see what I did when I went to use the toilet too (may sound rude/silly) but showing him helped him not feel scared about sitting on a seat that had a big hole in it LOL. His daddy showed him how to pee standing up:) He learnt very quickly! Oh and lots of patience and encouragement helps! Good Luck.

My son will also be turning three in about three weeks, and we've had him potty trained for almost three weeks now. Not sure it'll work for everyone, but the way we finally got him interested in using the potty is that I let him run around in nothing but a t-shirt one day over the weekend. No diaper, no underwear. Luckily for me, he didn't potty or poop anywhere except for his potty chair. Another suggestion, if the weather's warm where you are: let him potty outside. My son loves peeing off the back porch at our house! Best of luck with getting your little boy potty trained!
