How does the Naruto Shippuden series stack up?

For those who don't know, Naruto Shippuden is the continuation of the Naruto saga after episode 226. In episode 226, Sasuke leaves the Hidden Leaf Village in order to seek Orochimaru's tutelage. Naruto Shippuden takes place two years after the events of episode 226 of the original series. In Naruto Shippuden, every ninja has upgraded their jutsus and styles. So, I was wondering, how does Naruto Shippuden compare to the original Naruto? Is there a better plot? More action? What's different? What's the same?
