Have you read an answer that seemed really insightful or funny and wondered about the person? Do you think the avatars make the people look nice or interesting? Do you think people with avatars get more responses? Have you looked at someone's page and read their other questions and answers? Would you feel like a voyeur? Would you send someone an email or respond to one from someone who liked your answer?
