Has anyone heard of the program from Volunteer Africa (www.volunteerafrica.org). A young girl (19) from my town applied and is going to be departing from Nova Scotia to Tanzania, Africa in June for 7 weeks. She has raised most of the $2,900 that she needs in order to go and is hoping to stay for an extra two weeks and sight see. She is helping to develop rural areas (houses, schools, medical buildings and staff buildings) alongside other volunteers and villagers. There are 4, 7 and 10 week stays and they leave every 3 weeks or so. There is also another option to work in an orphanage. There are longer stays available for this type of volunteering. I am hoping to do the same next year, they have recruitments going for up to next October. Applications should be in 3 months in advance to the time you want to go. Just thought everyone would like to know about this, it is a great opportunity and shows that we are trying to make the world better.

Yes, I have heard of it and you may want to have your freind visit my link on mylot. She can find a lot of connections from my link while she is there or just have her contact me. I have freinds there as well. This is great. I am trying to do the same thing only problem is raising the funds. My goal is to travel and later obtain funding for computers in a childrens village that is currenlty underconstruction. If you have any suggestion or maybe ask your freind how she raised the money this would be great.

Great, I'll let her know. She had a few events at our local elementary and high schools. They had things like a car wash, "Crazy hair day" (she raised $1,900 from this alone) and donations from the local doctors and community clubs.

It's not a good time in my life to do this kind of thing. I have youngish children still and am all kinds of busy getting married, honeymoon, etc. But one day I would dearly love to sign up!! What a fantastic way to help others out, see another country, and experience a whole different society than what we normally live!

I agree, my daughter is 5 months but by next year I figure I might try and apply just for the four week tour and her father could keep her while he is on vacation. I don't want to wait or I may never do it!

This program is great, helps alot of poor people. And makes me thankful to the Lord for giving me so much blessings in life. I also believe that we should start helping our country first, by contributing to our community or much better by being a good citizen.
