The Lottery...but not what you think

One of my kids had to have a debate in class about this "religion" called the Lottery. In this Lottery, to win was the opposite of a good feeling. Once a year, the entire town would come to their town center and have each family representative, the oldest male, pick out a piece of folded paper out from inside this box. After each family took out a piece of paper, they would unfold it and see if it was either a blank piece of paper or the black dot. The person who had a black dot would have to be the town sacrifice. Everyone in town would pick up the largest stones they could find and throw them at the victim until they had reached death. I for one believe everyone has a right to believe in what they want to, but to do such a thing as to murder someone with no exact reason is just horrid and unhumane.
