Help me with toast!

I am always seeing people 'toast' by raising their glasses and clinking them together. What exactly does this mean? Why is it necessary to touch glasses? Why do some people say, 'Here, Here' when they toast. What can you tell me about the custom of toasting?

It's nothing really incredible. When you toast, there is some happy occasion and the one toasting will say some nice and appropriate thing to probably make everyone laugh. Though it sounds easy, it is not that simple to do a good toast.

It is a form of celebration. Clinking the glasses is like making a connection, almost a formal bond. "Here, here" is the overwhelming agreement by those observing the toast. It is a form of acknowledgement. I don't know if this is the exact meaning, but this is what I think it is. So lets raise our glasses of orange juice and propose a toast to Crazynurse...may we never be so sick as to be tended to by a crazy nurse...lol.

LOL I have only seen it done on TV. I dont know anyone that really does it in real life. I have no idea what it means or why they do it. It looks sorta stupid to me. LOL
