Does anybody have big babies out there? I have a 5-month old and he currently weighs about 18.4 lbs. He was born 6.8 lbs and now he almost three times his birthweight! I have not started solids yet, will do next month and i fear he'll triple his birthweight before his first birthday! Does someone share the same experience? Please share.

Our nephew was like that. We used to babysit hie and he was adorable and we loved him like he was our own child. He was the cutiest thing but he was a chunk. My wife would carry him around and it cuased her to have very bad back and hip pains that the doctor said was from carring the baby. He was also very lazy and was content to just lie around and watch the world go by. He was slow at starting to crawl. About 9 months but he did not put much effort into it. He luckily grew out of the baby fat and is a handsome 7 year old.

Oh, wow! I love chunky babies, their adorable! But I can't wait for my son to start rolling - he's 5 months and not doing it yet. I guess the weight is the factor? Your nephew did grew up right, hope my son does too. Thanks for sharing.

He did start crawling at 9 months but still liked to lie there and watch the world go by. Like your son he would just roll if he wanted to go somewhere and when he did crawl he used his head instead of his arms. It as hilarious to watch and he provided so much entertainment. We were real sad when his parents decided to move to Wisconson and we stopped watching him.

My daughter was the opposite. We struggled for her to be able to gain weight. Which she still don't do that well. Each child is different my daughter dropped off of the growing chart just after she turned one. Her pediatrician assured me that she was still healthy that she just wasn't a grower.

My neice is about a year old and she has definitely more than tripled her birth weight. She was 9 pounds at birth and now weighs 28 pounds.

Right! Babies triple their birth weight by their first birthday. My son is a little over 18 lbs now and only 5 months old. He's not too chubby probably he just have a large frame. I guess i have 7 months to see if he overshot his developmental milestone in terms of weight. Thanks for sharing.

Check with his doctor but it's probably alright. On average babies are supposed to double their birth weight by 6 months and triple by a year. You WANT him to triple by a year. Once he gets more mobile, his growth will slow down some probably anyway so don't worry about it just yet. All but one of my older children tripled by a year and the one that didn't was the one that was petite anyway but also had a lot of feeding problems. My youngest is only 5 months so it isn't an issue yet but he's doubled his birth weight already.

You are totally right. He'll probably slow down some time soon. Thank you for your insight.

Hi 7mfmns! That is so true. I've taken care of 3 babies and they indeed gained weight although not exactly tripled. More like doubled in the first few months after birth. Maybe because after birth, the digestive system of babies are not yet that "polished" (there's a word for that hehehe it's on the tip of my tongue grrrr). So they tend to accumulate and store everything they get fed with which mostly is milk right? My friend started giving fruit juices to her niece at 4 or 5 months and solid around that month or the next and the baby really really gained weight. I'll tell you if I have that experience. I'll keep in mind every sigle detail to share with you. Have a great day! Hugs to the L.O.

once he starts getting around he will start slimming down some. My daughter was 8lbs 2oz when she was born and now that she can walk and run. She actually has stayed at the same weight for the past 5 months. If I wasn't pregnant I think I would be losing weight as much as I run after her. I do get wow shes tall or big for her age but maybe she will be a model.

First of, congratulations on your present pregnancy! I do think also that he would start slowing down soon - i just don't know when exactly. Probably when he's more active as he's not crawling yet. I also hoped he would be tall (he was 26 inches at his 4 month check-up) and then he could play with the Duke Devils!....lol....or any team of his choice :-)

Quite opposite! My little girl is 11 months, and she is 16 pounds. She was 6.6 at birth and she's had trouble gaining. My nephew on the other hand, was wearing 2T clothing when he was 6 months old. Now that he's walking he's evened out a little more but he was a huge baby! Babies grow at different rates, if you're concerned you should talk to his doctor.

I'm not really concerned right now. They say that babies will slow down in gaining weight at certain months of age. I'll just wait and see then. Thank you.
