Random Acts of Vandalism..

Saturday night my boyfriend and I were at his condo, in bed talking at about 1:30 in the morning when I heard a few big bangs outside. He's on the 4th floor of his complex, so when I looked out the window I couldn't see anything but I kept hearing noise. It was like 2 big bangs and then a smash, sounded like glass shattering. It happened several times, so I grabbed my housecoat and went outside on the deck to see if I could see anything. He followed me outside, and his little brother came outside to see what was going on, too. Just as I walked outside, I heard the noise again, and it sounded really close. I knew at that point it was glass shattering, and my boyfriend and I exchanged a look since we knew it was most likely the windows of the condos on the first floor. It's a brand new complex, and the units on the first and most of the second floor aren't even done yet. We looked but couldn't isolate the sound and it was too dark to see anything really. Then the area was absolutely inundated with police cars and police on foot. One of the officers shone the light on us and asked us if we saw anything, but we hadn't. Just heard the loud crashing sounds. We crawled back into bed, heard radios crackling outside and what sounded like a police dog team searching the grounds. The next morning we woke up, got dressed and walked around the building. There were 8 windows smashed out in the first floor, 4 on the parking lot side (opposite side from his unit), 3 on the street side on our side, and one way down on the North side of the building close to where his was. There's a big pile of board near where most of the window were broken, so it's no mystery what they used, but why in the first place? We're both confused as to why someone would do this? At first we thought drunk kids (there's a bar right behind his building), but wouldn't they just smash out one window and then take off out of fear? It wasn't someone with a vendetta against someone else, because first, no one lives in those units yet (although they are sold) and secondly, it affected 5 different units. And the windows were very randomly hit. They skipped 4 or 5 windows in between, even though they were right beside a window that was smashed. It was so completely random, but it makes me mad that people would disrespect someone else's property for whatever reason. Sometimes I really dislike people.

Awww girl, I bet that was pretty scary! I'm really sorry y'all had to go through that. I wish I could give you some answers but the sad truth is sometimes people do these things just for their own sick amusement. I agree with you, sometimes I just hate people in general. I tend to get along with animals better really. You be really careful!

I wish I could answer that question for you but I really don't know. I have seen too many things vandalized in our area but still don't know why they do it. Perhaps they like the thrill of doing stupid things who knows. It really is sad because most of them do not get caught so they just keep doing it. I wish they had more penalties on those that did get caught maybe it would stop people from finding it a joke to do it. It costs the owners of buildings so much to fix the damage they cause. It really is just sad.

I know some homeowners will be really unhappy because some of those units are scheduled to be finished next month. Most of these people have been waiting to move into their new homes for over 2 years -- now that windows need to be replaced, a condo that was scheduled to be moved into in July will probably be pushed back to September.

I think you should have called the police and not went outside and endangered yourself. I also think that if more people reported more quickly they would catch them.

Police were covering the area less than 2 minutes after we walked outside. It's a small town, so I don't imagine it took them longer than 5 minutes to get there which was about as long as I heard all the noise. There are a lot of older people, retirees and the like in the complex, so I imagine the police were alerted from the first loud bang. And he's on the 4th floor of the complex. :) Not much worry about getting hurt way up there.. my boyfriend's brother tried throwing my lighter up to me from the ground where I'd dropped it and he couldn't make it. :)

It could be kids, bored and out for a thrill. A lot of kids today are bold enough to do something like that. They might have continued to break windows for a while, waiting for a reaction. If they are not caught, I'll bet they will continue their destructive acts until someone catches them.
