I've been looking at coverage of the protests against Richard Gere in India after he was televised kissing Shilpa Shetty at an AIDs rally. I knew public displays of affection were taboo in many parts of India, but the response to this seems a little over the top. Is this a case of the media blowing something our of proportion or is it really as big a deal as it seems?

Sometimes the reactions, to things that are utterly inoccuous, in some parts of the world border on mass hysteria. Even leading aside the issues of whether it is logical to be worried about public displays of affection (surely they are better than public displays of anger or abuse??), where does the anger come from? Generally the things that anger us most are the things which we see others doing but which we are too scared to do ourselves. I'm sure Mr Gere, who is oft known for his somewhat over the top antics even though his heart is in the right place, simply got caught up in the moment. I think the protesters need to take a long, hard look at themselves and work out what they are protesting against, and I guess more importantly what they are trying to achieve...?
