I'm currently living in a county where hitting as punishment is very common. Most have my students have been hit one way or another. Even I was hit when I was a kid. There was even a couple of cases here last month, where 2 kids were killed by their parents for hitting. Do you think it's right?

OOhh.. it is not just hitting alone... it is brutality. It is a wrongdoing if you're gonna kill your child and you reason out for discipline.
It is not bad to punish our kids but not to the extent of killing them. Even I dont really punish my kids because i dont want them to be hurt because i love them so much.
If your kid seem to be hardheaded, try to motivate them by giving rewards and recognition for the good things the may have accomplished. And talk to them directly. Nowadays, kids are often easy to deal with as long as you win their respect.
