 Actually, there were a few episodes in between. The episode you saw where Gene was due to go under the knife while Shannon was holding off, was when Gene had sneaked his cell phone into the operating/prep room. The nurse left the room to tell Shannon what Gene was up to. But, the call Gene got was about business, so he and Shannon left. Gene went away on business, thanks to the cell call, and Shannon took a pregnancy test (this was filled with loads of fun, as Tracy Tweed, Shannon's sister took Nick along with her to the pharmacy, where she purchased MANY different types of pregnancy tests, and other items that were meant to embarrass Nick). The following episode, Shannon's results came up negative. Meanwhile, Gene, on his way home from his business dealings was slipped an address by two women, who asked him to meet them there. He obliges, but finds that the address was for a restaurant, where the two women were waiting for him. They presented him with a contract which requested that Gene donate sperm to help the two women have a baby together. Which also lead to hilarity, as Gene asked Nick to call his cell phone to save him from the two women. The night that he got home, when he found out that Shannon was not expecting, he made the appointment for the both of them to have their procedures done, which was greeted with very little enthusiasm from Shannon, since she wanted to continue to try to have a baby.
