I have seen people of all different ages staying in them. Also campsites can be quite cheap. There are some wonderful multi day walks to do. My favourite of these is the Abel Tasman track on the beautiful South Island. It passes many lovely and unspoilt beaches. There are huts or campsites available. Buses and trains are quite cheap to travel around on. I explored Northland first. Then I flew to the South Island and did a loop around this. I travelled overland back up to Auckland. The scenery was excellent from the beaches and the wildlife to the glaciers and frosty looking mountains. Flights from the UK to New Zealand can be bought from Trailfinders or Travel Bag. I got a great deal on Air New Zealand stopping off in the USA and islands of the South Pacific. I travelled in November and spent Christmas and New Year there. Mid December airfares would have been too expensive for me.
