What DO you do with them? |
| |
| spin off from the other discussion.... okay, so we've determined that a lot of people do not like the heels on their store purchased breads.... So, you are down to the bottom of the loaf - 2 wimpy heels remain, perhaps even a little tattered from all the reaching over and around them. What do you do with them? Do you save them till you have enough for French toast, or croutons, or bread crumbs? Do you crumble them up and feed them to the birds? Do you turn them crust side inwards and make the kid a sandwich thinking "He'll never know....." Or.... Do you suffer through it and actually eat them yourself? | | | | | |

| | Well I will not eat the ends of the bread. I either throw it out to the birds or let my animals eat it. My dogs think it's the best treat in the world and so do our cows. I have done the whole turn the crust inwards and make a sandwich for my 7 year old cousin and he didn't know. Maybe because it was a peanut butter sandwich but it worked. | | | | | | |

| | I can't eat them, they are so weird, I don't know what it is but I don't like them at akk and wouldn't try to get my kids to eat them either =) I would feel bad giving them the ends =) We always save them and tear them up for the birds to eat outside =) | | | | | | |

| | i usually eat them.they make great hamburger tops. i'm the only one in the house that will though. the rest of them will throw them out..they should at least give it to the birds if they're not going to eat them. | | | | | | |

| | 'heels' that is a name I have never heard before. Here (in Glos, UK) we call them crusts (as well as the bts on the edges of the middel slices) and the very first piece cut is called the nobby. No idea why!! Anyway if they are very thin I throw them away (I used to feed them to the swans at our local canal but I can't get down the steps with my buggy). I do not fee dthe birds as we have too many local cats. If they are thick I toast them and spread them with lots of butter mmm!! | | | | | | |

| | mmmmm I can smell the thick piece of warm toasted bread - smothered in lavishing butter. I am eyeballing the counter and bread bag as I type this you know? I think I need to make a loaf, as the ones in my bread bag are looking pretty wimpy. I think a nice thick slice of pumpernickel crust sounds like a good lunch - with a chunk of colby jack cheese! | | | |

| | Opps you caught me, there have been a few times I've tried passing them off to kids (or grandkids) but guess it's a pay back for having smart desendants - they catch on really quick... usually the heels end up bird food, which are very happy to take care of them for me. | | | | | | |

| | The heels are bird food. I live near the beach and enjoy feeding the birds. They eat them quickly and beg for more. | | | | | | |

| | it's funny that you bring this up. Everyone leaves the heels of the bread for me. Sometimes I just toast them and eat them. If I get them before they're moldy, I put them in a ziplock bag and collect them in the freezer. Since we get an assortment of breads, eventually they get used towards stuffing. That won't happen as often since my husband and I are now watching our carb intake. I love the heels or ends of french bed anytime. | | | | | | |

| | I actually like the heels, so I'll eat them. I certainly can't see saving them for any other use...they'd probably mold first. LOL. Now, if they are torn up, I'll probably just toss them. | | | | | | |

| | if the bread is really fresh, it's the first piece i eat, and i dig the bottom one out too, but if it's a bit old, i toast it and put butter and vegemite on it, i love it when it get crispy, but as usualy happens, the kids go around it and it is stale after they have attacked it, so i give it to the dogs, the ends are best when the bread is hot from the oven, yum | | | | | | |

| | sounds good to me! except, I do not know what vegemite tastes like. I might could go for an occasional Nuttella on the heel. | | | |
