 My husband and I went for tea at his parents house today.
My husband has a younger brother who recently got engaged to a lady who is older than him. She has a little girl from her previous marriage. They have only been together for about a year.
Today his mum showed him a picture of himself when he was about 10 months old. The picture is framed and has been on the sideboard in their lounge ever since it was taken.
She said to my husband (her son) Would you mind if I took your picture out of this frame and replace it with a picture of Elisha - the little girl?
My husband was so upset. I was absolutely gob smacked. How could she have even considered replacing a picture of her own son with a picture of a little girl that isnt even related to her. If she does want a picture of the little girl which is fine why doesnt she just buy a new frame.
Are we just being too sensitive or you would also be upset if your mum asked this?

 princess1011 (254) | 2 years ago | I agree that you can get frames cheap enough now so she should just have got another one. She is going to do that now but I dont see why she even bothered asking. She could see if was a bit upset and said it was fair enough and after all he was her son. I think it was insensitive but I also think she thought she was doing the right thing by asking. Still I'm glad that it wasnt just us that thought it was wrong.

I think that she is trying to be nice to the potential members of the family. ( to me a girl engaged to my son would be a part of the family after a year.)It would be a big deal for the child to see that your MIL thinks enough of her to put her photo in the lounge!
Try to think of the child also.

I dont have a problem with her putting a picture up of the little girl - like you say it is a nice welcoming gesture to the little girl and her mum to feel part of the family but this should not be done at the expense of her own son.
I dont think she meant any malice by it - she just didnt think he would be bothered by it. I know we can all be a little bit insensitive and thoughtless at times without meaning to be. We certainly wont hold it against her, life is too short, I just felt so sorry for my husband. | |

I am still shocked that as a mother she could have even considered replacing her sons photo.

I wanted to cry when I read about this. I don't have any children or any siblings. Not many things move me to crying but how can anyone replace one child for another? It breaks me heart to thing about it.
We all have room in our hearts to love more that one person/child.
