My girlfriend's yard is more brown than green. What kind of grass seed is the best, and how and when should you plant it?

What is your growing zone? That will be needed in order to recommend different types of grass. The old turf should be removed and fertilizer should be applied. Next till the soil. Once that is completed rake the soil to the desired grade and remove or break down large pieces of soil. Now that the area has been prepared spread the grass seed. Once the seed has been spread the soil should be tamped. I use a recycled newspaper seed accelerator to cover the new seed. It expands when it gets wet and has a green tint to it. It works and looks better but some people use straw to cover newly applied seed. When you use straw you MUST rip it apart and fluff it. It can not be in bailed clumps because the grass seed will not get any sunlight and will not germinate. It will also promote the grow of mold. Also apply it thick. The thicker the better. This will keep the birds from eating all of your seed. But remember it has to be fluffy. DO NOT use hay because it is less expensive. If you are going to use hay you might as well not do anything and cover the ground with the hay. Then all of the weeds and unwanted plants can grow and it will save the trouble of doing the other work.

I'm in the same spot right now, we just moved into our house and the people before us didnt take care of their yard. Our neighbors are like YARD HAPPY or however you want to say that, but they have like plush green grass and awesome looking yards. One told us to dig up the yard, rotatil* it and plant new grass seed. and just water it every day, but dont water it when the sun is out or you will make your new grass burn since the water magnifies the sun and the sun will burn it of course. I dont know what kinda of grass seed to use yet, as we havent tried it yet. but thats the only advice I can give that I know! I hope everything works/worked out great.
