How many people would it take for you not to get into an elevator?

There are always capacity signs on an elevator, but who stands in the hallway thinking...ok there are 8 people in there, with an average weight of 175 pounds...should I get in?
I found myself in this position yesterday, when an elevator was crowded and one of the people inside held the door for me to get in. I thanked them and said no, thinking...what is the limit here?
Are we to pack our selves into the elevator like sardines?
I took the stairs.
What would you do?

If there is more than 4 people I will either take the stairs or wait until the next car is available. I can't stand being packed in like sardines like that. I think it is a matter of common courtesy to take that into consideration as well. No one likes to be stacked up like cord wood to get into the elevator, just to fit one more person. Not to mention I am claustrophobic!

Depends on the situation i am in, if i am in a hurry and i want to rush, then i won't mind entering the elevator even though it is occupied to its capacity. If the elevator boy stops me from entering saying that the elevator is occupied then i will pick the stair case.
If i have enough time then i will wait for the elevator to come back for its next trip. I am lazy walking down or up the stairs. Why should i hurry if i am having enough time.

i wouldnt go in if there was about 7 or more as i dont like closed in places
