You can probably get a live CD so that you can give it a try without installing it first. This is a good way to try out different linux builds before deciding on one for certain. You may be able to find ubuntu as a download. Its free so perfectly legal. I use a torrent client to download mine. It shouldn't cost you anything. Its not much use trying to torrent on dial up though so if you cant do that,Linux magazines sometimes have live CD's with them.

| | 2. Ayreish (366) | 2 years ago | My husband has Linux on his machine with an option to boot into Windows. He was raving about Linux being great until he ran into a couple problems. There was something about packet loss (I think that's what he said it was) and he's had issues with it concerning his games and server. All the programs available for it are free and I've used several of them myself. I guess it really depends on what you want to do with the computer and programming as to how well it will work for you. There are plenty of sites out there to help you learn Linux and troubleshoot any problems you may have. If you decide to get Linux, I will be happy to ask my husband which sites he recommends for it.:)

| | 3. alpine_007 (1210) | 2 years ago | you can first try out linux using a live cd for a few days and if you like it, then install and if you don't like it then don't. i think that you should install windows on your computer too because some of the softwares are not compatible with linux os.
