VCRs,do you still use one? email this discussion to a friend?

DarthDub (36)   ranked 1 out of 13 in vcr2 years ago

I still use one from time to time. I own alot of tapes. My kids use one all the time, most of their movies are on tape. On my last trip to the store i noticed that there wasn't much price difference between VCRs and DVD players anymore. Even the top brand VCRs can be had for a great deal. I've also noticed that my VCR has out lasted three DVD players and my tapes have a much better survival rate than my DVDs do. That was the most surpriseing thing.

I never thought about it before you mentioned it, DarthDub, but my VCR's have also outlasted several DVD players. Interesting.

I also have a huge pile of VHS tapes from when my children were younger.

Every once in a while, I will dig out the VCR to watch something, usually home made recordings of the family.

Welcome to myLot!:)

thanks for the welcome and response.:) I knew it wasn't just me that had noticed VCRs tend to out last DVD players

I still have a VCR tapes but I'm using my DVD player more and more. Some video stores have phased out their tape inventories. DVDs would eventually lose ground, too, as pay-per-views, online movies and TiVos become more popular. I think it's better because you won't have to keep your stock of tapes and DVDs anymore.

Yes it's true most rental stores have all but eliminated the VCR tapes. I had chance to buy many tapes when the local place decided to stop renting VCR tapes. I brought about 160 for $3.00 or less. thanks for your response

We probably use our VCR more than we do our DVD player as a lot of my the movies my son likes are ones we have on Videos. Mostly if we buy a new movie though it is now always a DVD, but when we tape something from the t.v to watch later it is with the VHS so we probably use that more than our DVD player. I imagine though as our DVD's stock up and start to out number our Videos that will change as videos will evantually be phased out I assume. Though I have to say I don't notice a great deal of difference in the quality when watching either a DVD or Video but I suppose its the slimmed down more advanced look and the newer technology that will win out in the end. What was that song....Video killed the radio show.
Welcome to myLot by the way.

I still have one because it's managed to last through the years. It's good for watching home movies and disney tapes. DVD players tend to break faster, but they're so cheap these days that lasting a year is long enough.
I prefer DVDs though because they just seem crisper, cleaner, and easier to use.
Unfortunately for those that prefer tapes, a lof of films don't come out on VHS anymore.

I have a DVD/VCR combo player but i use the dvd player all the time cause we only rent/buy dvd movies now. Tapes can get dirty overtime and so with the tapehead and it's a pain to clean unlike the cd that you can just wipe in a snap.

Hello, darthdub and welcome to myLot. Yes, I stil have VHS, but I don't use them as much now that there are DVDs. In fact I think I like VCDs better than VHS tapes. I have two VHS players and one DVD/VHS player. It is nice to have to play the tapes from time to time because I don't feel like buying the movie on DVD:). Have a nice day.

I have a VCR and a DVD player that is built into my computer. I copied most of my tapes to DVD format however. I've noticed that after a while that VHS tapes get funky after a few years. Squiggles and wiggles on the top and the bottom of the picture can really kill the experience especially for me.

However, you are quite right about VCR's lasting longer than the DVD players. At the same token, when you purchase the kind that are installed in the computer, your only out $30 bucks. That includes the kind that records CD's and DVD's and MP3's. I record a heck of a lot of all three. So I don't know if I can say they are a worse deal, as I don't use the VCR that often.

I can never give up using a VCR because there are some movies that I love that are exclusively on VHS. At least I have not seen them on DVD. I would still keep my VHS, they might be worth something sometime.

We still have a VCR because the kids still have films on VHS and im not going to go out and replace them all. We have both dvds and VHS so we will keep both until we dont have any tapes left!

So i can watch movie in both kind of these and it doesn't waste much room either.
