What are ways we can protect our family from break ins?

If you have read my other post you will know what happened this weekend with the police. I was curious what can we do to make our home safe from break ins? We already know we need a new front door. We have a hiding place that my daughter knows to go in if we are home and there is a break in. But what else can we do to protect our selves?

Great Pyrenees - A good dog for kids when you want protection.
I think it is a really good idea that you gave your daughter a hiding place, really smart. You should get a home security system that makes a loud noise if a window or door is broken. That can scare of the intruders and alert neighbors, and authorities right away. Also, if you want to be extra safe you could always get a dog. Some large breeds that are good with kids could be a Great Dane, Labs, and Great Pyrenees. Great Pyrenee's would be an ideal dog to get because the breed actually likes having something to protect and watch over. And their personality's are overall gentle and patient. If you don't know what they are, it is the dog that I have on my avator, and i'll add a picture of another to this discussion. Notice how they both have smaller things (baby and cat) with them-they like watching over things:) Some breeds that you'll want to stay away from with small kids are German Shepards, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Pitbulls, etc. But of course these suggestions are only if you are open to dogs.

I'm sorry about your dog! We recently lost 2 of ours. Mastiff's aren't one of the more vicious breeds, but they can be very unpredictable. I know all animals can be unpredictable, but if I had to choose Mastiffs would be more leaning towards the more aggressive breeds. If you do get a great pyrenee's you'll need to have the time to brush it a lot! Their coat needs a lot of attention :) But I think it would be a good dog to have because of it's protectiveness and nonagressiveness.
